     Quand le nom de Anthony Minghella vient sur mes lèvres, je pense inévitablement à son film Le Patient Anglais (1996), gagnant de 9 Oscars dont celui du Meilleur Film comme celui du Meilleur Réalisateur. Minghella est non seulement un concepteur d’images parfaitement fascinant mais il est également un conteur hors pair, les deux éléments essentiels d’un réalisateur de films, car pour réaliser un film de qualité, il faut une histoire, et par la suite, le talent de la mettre en images Anthony Minghella le fait de façon extraordinaire et même davantage, je vois son œuvre comme la somme accomplie d’un travail de titan. Et par ailleurs, que dire du talent des acteurs, de leur talent émérite mais aussi de l’importance de la distribution des rôles qui devient un élément clé de la réussite d’un film car si le comédien n’habite pas le personnage il ne saura jamais faire de vous son spectateur privilégié, ses yeux, ses oreilles, le cinéphile vers qui décliner son dialogue, vers qui orienter ses gestes, vers qui séduire, vers qui faire rêver, afin de vous amener dans son propre univers. Naturellement, et avec le grand talent qu’on leur connait, dans le film Cold Mountain, Kidman, Law, Zellweger ainsi que l’entière distribution du film, accomplit un travail remarquable. Le scénario est d’une perfection à la virgule prêt, la cinématographie de John Seale saura vous éblouir et vous ravir du début jusqu’à la fin. Hors de tout doute, c’est un des films les plus intelligents qu’il m’ait été donné de voir, ce film parle, possède des émotions vives, fortes qui atteignent le cœur, qui donnent un supplément d’âme à tout votre être. C’est comme si mille soleils apparaissaient soudainement dans l’univers, autant de planètes à découvrir, autant de sensations qui vous font vibrer, qui vous font vivre des moments d’une si belle intensité. Cold Mountain est assurément une très belle réussite de Anthony Minghella où le talent créatif est au rendez-vous, la vision du réalisateur s’exprimant dans chacune des images du film, donnant naissance à une œuvre magnifique. Alors, prenez donc le temps, de savourer chaque moment de ce film.

     Whenever the name of Anthony Minghella comes to mind, inevitably the visuals of The English Patient (1996), winner of 9 Oscars among which Best Film and Best Director, flash back in me and unreel once more, like an endless journey or voyage within. Minghella could certainly visualize with great acuteness the visuals of a film as well as apprehend the content of a story and tell it in a very fascinating way, two essential key elements of film making, because if you don’t know how to tell a story, and you can’t photograph it, then I’d say:  »Get out of the way, this game’s not for you ». But, of course, Anthony Minghella does it in an extraordinary way, and even more, as a director he makes a tremendous and titanesque job while creating his work of art. But also, let’s not forget the actors, among other things their great talent as well as the importance of casting the right actor according to the very role he’ll be playing because casting is most certainly a key element in the success of a film. If the actor doesn’t live up to its role or cannot inhabit the character in a most believable manner then he won’t be able to reach you, you will never be a very attentive spectator, you eyes will be detached from his performance, your ears won’t catch the music and sonority of the words and language that ought to be coming out of his mouth, the movie fan in you will not be able to find any meaning in his dialogue, his gestures will be awkward and won’t get your attention, the moment of seduction will not materialize, the dream will be cut short, and you’ll remain worlds apart. But, of course, and with the great talent which is bestowed upon the actors of Cold Mountain, Kidman, Law, Zellweger as well as the entire casting of the movie, they simply deliver some monumental work. The screenplay is orchestrated like a fine piece of music, John Seale’s cinematography is dazzling and most seductive, from beginning to end. Beyond the shadow of a doubt, this is one of the most intelligent film I have seen in years, this movie talks in a very vibrant language, it delivers emotions which are always on the edge, it reaches down deep in your heart, and it brings you a supplement of soul to your whole being. It’s as if a thousand suns, were suddenly created in the universe, like so many galaxies yet to be discovered, so many sensations yet to be born, intense moments of life, like a beautiful bouquet in bloom. Cold Mountain, is most assuredly a great accomplisment in the too brief filmography of Minghella but his creative talent was certainly in full action, his visionary understanding of film making listed or indexed in every image of the film, giving birth to a most extraordinary work. And so it was, that on a quite chilly January night, in Montreal, I started watching Cold Mountain, and that I began the journey.
