     D’une durée approximative de 242 minutes, ce coffret contenant deux disques DVD présente la performance d’Elvis qui eut lieu le 12 janvier 1973, celle du 14 janvier qui fût diffusée par satellite en direct ainsi que le programme télévisée que NBC programma le 4 avril 1973. Avec ce spectacle, Elvis atteint une maturité et une confiance en lui-même, sachant qu’il n’a plus rien à prouver à quiconque. Tout au long du concert, on sent la parfaite maîtrise d’Elvis, chaque note qu’il chante comme faisant partie d’une prière qu’il adresse non pas seulement aux spectateurs qui se trouvent dans l’audience mais à la planète entière, montrant la force de son amour comme une puissance de vie faisant partie de l’élément divin. Aloha Elvis, et Mahalo, pour la musique et les chansons.

     C’est John Lennon qui a dit: «Avant Elvis, il n’y avait rien.» Je suppose que j’aurais pu le dire aussi!

     P.S. Probablement que la date n’est pas inscrite dans le calendrier Maya mais elle l’est certainement dans le mien, le 14 janvier 2013 on commémorera le 40e anniversaire de Elvis, Aloha From Hawaii. Des festivités, d’ailleurs, sont prévus à Hawaii.

At the time of this performance, Elvis had reached a peak, showmanship, maturity and self-assurance that no one, fans or not, could ever denied him. You can see and feel that he is perfectly at ease with himself and the entire production of the show, every note that he sings becomes a part of a prayer that he offers to the audience but also to the rest of the world, showing the effects and power of his love like a tremendous force of life, being part of the divine element.      P.S. I don’t know if it’s included in the Mayan calendar but it certainly is in mine, on January 14, 2013, we will commemorate the 40^th anniversary of Elvis, Aloha From Hawaii. Festivities are already scheduled in Hawaii.

     Alors qu’il débute cette série de concerts, le 10 août 1970, Elvis est âgé de 35 ans. Il est dans une forme physique resplendissante, sa voix est mature et au meilleur de sa forme. À le voir se déhancher ainsi sur la scène de l’International Hotel, on pourrait penser qu’il en a encore pour l’éternité à chanter et à éblouir ses fans, mais hélas, la page d’histoire allait bientôt s’écrire, il ne lui restait plus que sept ans à vivre. Mais grâce à ce film, nous retournons dans le passé et redécouvrons un Elvis au faîte de sa gloire, les femmes dans l’audience complètement sous le charme. On peut dire qu’en ce début des années 70, quand Elvis se donnait en spectacle à Las Vegas, que Vegas se transformait en Planète Elvis.

     J’aime beaucoup l’édition spéciale concoctée par Rick Schmidlin, sortie le 19 janvier 2001. Michael Solomon a en fait le montage. Ernst Mikael Jorgensen y était comme consultant sur la production. Le film est davantage consacré à Elvis et les fans ne peuvent que se réjouir. On retrouve aussi l’édition spéciale tout comme la version originale du film sur le DVD Elvis That’s The Way It Is, sorti au mois d’août 2007.

     Cela fait toujours un effet assez spécial de retourner ainsi dans le passé. C’est sans doute ce qui m’intrigue le plus d’un film ou de simples photos, voir à nouveau le visage de quelqu’un qui nous a quitté, qui n’est plus de ce monde, existe-t-il un autre moyen de se réapproprier cet individu qui a quitté la sphère terrestre, certainement pas dans tout ce qu’une personne fût, mais au moins en partie, ne serait-ce que pour se remémorer quelques brefs moments de ce que fût sa vie, de ces moments vibrants, heureux, plein de joie, comme il en existe dans la vie de chaque individu.

     À chaque fois que je visionne ce film, il me semble le voir pour la première fois. Elvis, assurément ne vieillit pas sur la celluloïd. Et comme le disait Joe Exposito: Il fait bon de se souvenir d’Elvis de cette façon, c’est-à-dire, au sommet de sa forme, et dans toute sa gloire et réussite musicale. Bien des décennies plus tard, Elvis serait devenu comme un icône, la légende ayant transcendée la vie de l’individu, ses gestes, ses allées et venues, ses paroles comme des actions d’une vie toujours en mouvements.

     On peut dire sans se tromper qu’Elvis fût le plus grand chanteur de son époque, et qu’encore aujourd’hui il n’est pas oublié. Ses chansons et sa musique vivent dans le cœur des gens qui eux vont sur le chemin, le regard fixé vers Graceland, un peu comme les pèlerins en route, vers Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.

     Où tout cela va-t-il finir? Certainement aux Portes du Paradis, où les vibrations musicales se font entendre partout dans l’univers. Mais en entendant, je placerai sur la table tournante un de mes albums préférés d’Elvis, un disque compact, où peut-être bien un film car les heures coulent ainsi tout doucement comme un long fleuve tranquille.

     As he is opening this series of concerts on August 10, 1970, Elvis is 35 years old. He finds himself in top shape condition, both physically and mentally. His voice has matured and he delivers the songs with perfect ease, and in total control. Just to see him, shaking, moving and grooving to the beat of the music, you would think that he has yet so many years to sing and entertain his fans, but alas, the blank page concerning his future life had yet to be written, and it would reaveal that he had only seven years left to live. But thanks to this film, one can revisit the past and find for himself how it was during those franctic days. We see Elvis during his days of fame and glory, the women completely subdued by his charms. Whenever Elvis played Vegas, the town would live to his rhythm, and the other way around would also be true, for Elvis.Las Vegas, for this brief period of time, would become: Planet Elvis.

     I love very much the Elvis That’s The Way It Is Special Edition, produced by Rick Schmidlin, released on January 19, 2001. Michael Solomon did the editing. Ernst Mikael Jorgensen was a production consultant. This version uses mainly Elvis’ footage of the film and the fans couldn’t be happier. You will also find this version on the DVD Two Disc Special Edition, released in August 2007, as well as the original theatrical release.

     I must say, that going back to the past in such a way, gives you a very special feeling inside. Maybe that’s part of the reason why I’m so enthralled with films, or just a black and white picture, of someone who has departed, so long ago. Just to see the face of someone who is no longer with us, is not necessarily an awkward feeling, but you certainly notice the passing of time from your own life as well. You bring back to life certains moments that are now vanished and gone, you can never bring it back in its entirety, but some flashes or pictures come back in your mind, haunting you, as you’re trying to seize, some bits and pieces from the past. Moments of joy, cries during the lonely nights, the essence of it never lost in your subconscious.

     Everytime that I watched Elvis That’s The Way It Is, I always feel as if it was the first time that I ever saw it. Of course, Elvis on celluloid, doesn’t get a wrinkle. And Joe Exposito said, somewhere along those lines: It’s good to remember Elvis in such a way, that is to say, in top shape and in all of his glory, performing and entertaining at his very best.

     Many decades have gone by, and now Elvis is more like an icon, his legend has trancended the life of the individual, his gestures, the days of his life, his words as well as his actions belong to the days of the past, but somehow still live in the present time.

     There is no doubt that Elvis was the greatest vocalist of his times, and beyond, and today, he is still quite alive, thanks to his many fans, around the world. His music and songs are not to be forgotten. Somehow, I see in the pilgrimage of fans en route to Graceland, the same devotion that the pilgrims have on their way to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.

     Where will it end? Most certainly, beyond Heaven’s Gate, where the musical vibrations may be heard across the universe. But meanwhile, I will put some of my favorite Elvis’ albums on the turntable, most probably listen to a few compact disc, and spend an evening watching an Elvis movie, so that the hours may be lived in a quiet fashion, the rhythm of my life, ever so serene and peaceful.

The 25^th Anniversary Concert

     Encore une fois il m’est très difficile de trouver les mots pour parler de ce concert, son concept est déjà assez hors de l’ordinaire, c’était de réunir les musiciens et choristes qui ont travaillé avec Elvis, principalement sur le show d’Hawaii « Aloha from Hawaii » mais aussi des extraits de show à Las Vegas en utilisant l’image d’Elvis projeté sur un écran, le restant de la scène étant utilisé par les musiciens, choristes et chef d’orchestre tout comme pour le show original. Je vous avoue bien franchement que je n’aurais su penser ou même imaginer un tel concert, eh bien, ce soir, j’en suis à mon deuxième visionnement et je peux vous affirmer que la magie fonctionne encore. Il faut dire qu’avec le DVD on a vraiment l’impression qu’Elvis chante avec l’orchestre, le montage est fait d’une façon extraordinaire, utilisant la technologie d’aujourd’hui, ce qui permet d’avoir un son qui était tout simplement impossible d’obtenir dans les années 70. Le groupe vocal The Sweet Inspirations portent vraiment bien leur nom et sont véritablement inspirés, The Jordanaires, The Imperials donnent des performances tout aussi sensationnelles. James Burton s’amuse beaucoup et n’a rien perdu de son talent, le son de sa guitare et des solos qu’il fait sont une jouissance pour l’oreille. Glenn Hardin joue du piano avec le même enthousiasme et la même fougue que lors du show en janvier 1973. Le bassiste Jerry Scheff fait virevolter les notes de façon parfaitement détendue, souriant, décontracté, en pleine possession de tous ses moyens, comme tous les autres faisant partie du spectacle, incluant le chef d’orchestre, Jos Guercio. La voix d’Elvis a une présence fabuleuse, son énergie, son talent transcende tout. En 2012, nous en sommes rendu au 35e anniversaire de sa mort et il est toujours aussi vivant dans le cœur des gens, d’où le titre du concert Elvis Lives, un anagramme utilisé à plusieurs reprises, mais qui définit bien la portée et l’influence que possède encore Elvis dans le monde d’aujourd’hui. Il faut dire que le choix de ses chansons a été vraiment très judicieux, en plus du thème Also Sprach Zarathustra, on peut y entendre 25 grands succès d’Elvis dont voici la liste: C.C. Rider, Burning Love, Welcome to my World, I Can’t Stop Loving You, Steam Roller, Johnny B. Goode, You Gave me a Mountain, That’s All Right, You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’,Mystery Train/Tiger Man, Just Pretend, Are you Lonesome Tonight? Ce que la technologie permet de faire aujourd’hui est une chose assez hallucinante en soi mais à quelque part il faut qu’il y ait une âme, et croyez-moi, dans ce concert, tous les protagonistes sont d’une énergie débordante et d’un professionnalisme sans égal. J’ai découvert Elvis à l’adolescence, et tout au long de ma vie, jamais aucune voix ne m’a autant enchantée que la sienne. Il sut toucher le cœur de bien des gens de par son magnétisme et son talent inouï, dans ses ballades sa voix vibrait d’une manière intense et d’une forte présence. Le cœur et l’âme d’Elvis se révèlent dans ses chansons, c’est là qu’il exprime avec force et puissance, ses sentiments, ses émotions, ses désirs, ses frustrations, ses manques, sa volonté de transcender toutes choses, c’est son chemin de vie, sa gloire, sa réussite mais aussi l’envers de tout cela.

The 25^th Anniversary Concert

     It doesn’t happen all that often but sometimes I’m at loss with words for describing a concert or a show of any kind and with Elvis Lives it seems to be the case, as the concept of the show itself is quite out of the ordinary. The plan was to reunite the musicians and back-up singers who worked with Elvis mainly on the Hawaiian show « Aloha from Hawaii » but also bits and pieces from shows in Vegas to project the image of Elvis on a large screen, the remaining of the stage being used by those same musicians, back-up singers and band leader from the original show. I will be very honest with you, I could never have thought or imagined such a show, well tonight is my second viewing of the concert and yes I’m flabbergasted and the magic and the vibes from Elvis is still there. No doubt, with the DVD the illusion that Elvis is singing with the band is amplified, the editing is simply mind boggling; with the help of today’s high tech it first brings you a sound that was unavailable in the 70′. The vocal group The Sweet Inspirations really do live up to their names they are truly inspired; the Jordanaires, The Imperials both give performances which are nothing less but breathless and sensational. You can see James Burton taking great pleasure being on the stage and playing the solos that bring an exhilarating joy to your ear. Glen Hardin shows just as much enthusiasm and is full of dash just like on the original show from January 1973. Jerry Scheff plays the bass notes in a perfectly relaxed manner, smiling, laid-back, and in total control of his talent, and the same can be said for all the others on the stage, including, the band leader, Joe Guercio. Elvis’voice has a fabulous presence, energy, vibrations, that transcend just about everything. In 2012, we’ll be commemorating the 35th anniversary of his death, but he’s always ever present and living in the heart of people, thus the title of the concert Elvis Lives, an anagram familiar to the Elvis fans, that portrays without fail the importance and influence from Elvis in today’s world. One has to agree that the choice of songs in his repertoire were quite judicious, not becoming obsolete by any means through the decades. The concert begins with Also Sprach Zarathustra and Elvis can be heard singing the following 25 songs: C.C. Rider, Burning Love, Welcome to my World, I Can’t Stop Loving You, Steamroller Blues, Johnny B. Goode, You Gave Me A Mountain, That’s All Right, You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’, Mystery Train/Tiger Man, Just Pretend, Are You Lonesome Tonight? Walk a Mile in my Shoes, In the Ghetto, Polk Salad Annie, Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Wonder of You, Suspicious Mind, I’ll Remember You, A Big Hunk O’ Love, My Way, How Great Thou Art, If I Can Dream, American Trilogy and Can’t Help Falling in Love. What technology allows you to do today is quite fascinating but somehow there’s got to be a soul to it, and believe me, in this concert, all of the participants overflow with energy and demonstrate a kind of professionalism that remains without equal. I’ve been listening to Elvis’ voice for quite some time now, and I truly believe that there never was a greater musical phenomenon from any period of time or category. Like someone said in the beginning: »He’s in a class all by himself. » It will always be very difficult to determine what made or cause the success or the birth of such a phenomenon as Elvis Presley in such a powerful way; some will mention his appearance that was truly out of this world, both men and women agreed on that, his talent as a singer was absolutely unique, his charisma and so forth. His numerous fans have never stopped loving him, but then again, love it is well known do not obey to any commandments. No doubt, the heart and soul of a person contains the parameters for love and adoration, the purpose remaining unquestionable, no matter the tangent it may take for either, life or people. The title of the concert expresses it well: »Elvis Lives », and believe me, the flame is still burning with great force. (I will presume that Elvis from the Other Side has travelled on the road to his destiny, allowing his evolution to continue, he may be right now living on Earth being reincarnated, who knows? But for the fans, in a way, we’re still travelling on the road that leads to Graceland, and why not? So wherever you may be Elvis, I wrote this one thinking of you. In closing, I say Hello! Certainly not goodbye!

ELVIS / VIVA LAS VEGAS

     Encore une fois après l’écoute de ce disque on se rend compte de l’excellence de la performance d’Elvis tout comme celle des choristes et musiciens. On se ferme les yeux, on laisse la musique parvenir à son oreille comme une vague lointaine qui remonte tout doucement en-dedans de soi alors que mille images et souvenirs refont surface et dansent sur des nuages comme un fleuve rejoignant sa source de vie et baignant à nouveau dans l’immense étendue de l’océan. Les années défilent, les décennies nous dévoilent les déchirures, les blessures et certains visages que l’on croyaient avoir parfaitement oubliées soudainement se dressent devant nous comme des icônes, comme une prière depuis longtemps oubliée. L’image apparaît au début de manière un peu flou, puis l’objectif de votre vision se fixe tout doucement dans votre esprit et toute la scène brille d’une lumière aux teintes surréalistes. Votre regard se fixe sur les traits nets et précis de gens qui ont arrêtés de vieillir, vous vous retrouvez à l’intérieur d’un passé tel que vous l’avez vécu il y a de cela, il vous semble, si longtemps, pourtant ce n’était qu’hier. Un brin de nostalgie flotte dans l’air et imprègne nos pensées, pour quelques moments on croit entendre à nouveau les paroles d’un être cher qui nous a quitté depuis bien longtemps, ce sont des paroles de réconfort où les sentiments de bien-être et de sérénité font ressentir leur présence, faisant ressortir le mysticisme de toute la rencontre. Notre cœur, notre esprit, notre âme s’envole et c’est la vie qui dans tout son éclat transcende toute chose qui nous entoure. Voilà un peu l’état d’esprit dans lequel je me trouvais, ce soir, lors de l’écoute de ce disque d’Elvis. Je pouvais sentir la présence d’Elvis sur scène, ses fabuleux choristes tels que The Imperials, The Sweet Inspirations, J.D. Sumner and the Stamps, ses musiciens qui l’entourent, je revois un jeune James Burton à la guitare solo, Charlie Hodge, l’homme à tout faire, qui lui apporte rafraîchissements, foulards ou autres choses. Tant d’années ont passées et jamais le souvenir ne s’est effacé pour tant de gens, tant de fans pour qui la voix d’Elvis résonne toujours à leur oreille comme une présence sans fin, comme un compagnon de tous les jours et de tous les événements. Sur ce disque on retrouve l’enregistrement de Viva Las Vegas dans sa version originale puis en concert See See Rider, The Wonder Of You, Polk Salad Annie, Release Me, Let It Be Me, I Just Can’t Help Believing, Walk A Mile In My Shoes, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Patch It Up, You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me, You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling, An American Trilogy, Never Been To Spain, You Gave Me A Mountain, The Impossible Dream (The Quest). La qualité sonore est-il utile de le préciser est d’une qualité exceptionnelle, je dirais même transcendante, enfin c’est de cette manière que je l’ai entendue il y a quelques instants. Il n’y a jamais eu d’autres chanteurs qu’Elvis pour apporter autant de joie dans mon cœur. J’ai été conquis par la voix d’Elvis il y a de cela bien longtemps mais le charme ne s’est jamais brisé. Est-ce l’amour de la musique qui est venu en premier, ou est-ce la voix d’Elvis à laquelle je n’ai su résister qui m’a en tout premier lieu séduit? Une chose est certaine, le mariage dure depuis très longtemps!

     After so many years of listening to Elvis’ music I’m still amazed by the quality of his overall production, the sound of his voice ever so seducing, the harmony he gets from the back-up singers, the musicians accompanying him in great tempo and with much gusto. All you have to do is close your eyes, let the music reach into your ears like a wave coming from afar, that slowly engulfs you within as images and souvenirs come to the surface, dancing on clouds like a light rain, then all of it becoming a stream rushing to its primal source of life, flowing uninterruptedly into the vast expanse of the ocean. The years go by, the decades unmask the heartbreak and tearing apart, through the faces of strangers in the crowd reminding of the ones we used to know and live with, suddenly they’re in front of us just like icons, or some mantras or prayers we have long forgotten and cannot recite anymore. First, the picture appears through a mist, then the focus point of your vision becomes clearer in your mind and the entire scene is suddenly illuminated with a surreal brightness. You find your eyes looking upon people who have long ago stopped aging, you observe their traits and figure so perfectly clear and precise like in a painting, somehow the past surges again but you know you have lived it so entirely, yes it seems so long ago, and yet it was only yesterday. A bit of nostalgia fills the air and impregnate your thoughts, for a few brief moments you think you’re able to hear the voices of very dear people who have departed so many years ago, you feel inside the comforting thoughts, the well-being, the serenity of the moment as their presence becomes so tangible, bringing out the mysticism of the encounter. Your heart, your mind, your soul is lifted off the ground and life takes the upper hand in all of its luminousness, transcending everything that surround you. This is approximately the state of mind I was in late last night as I was listening to Elvis Viva Las Vegas CD. I could feel the presence of Elvis on the stage, his fabulous back-up singers such as The Imperials, The Sweet Inspirations, J.D. Sumner and the Stamps, the musicians which accompany him, I could see a young James Burton playing his lead guitar, Charlie Hodge ever so attentive to Elvis’needs. So many years have gone by and the people have never forgotten, so many fans for whom the voice of Elvis still reverberates in the auditorium or elsewhere like a never ending vibration, like a friend who’s always present in good times and bad times. On this CD you’ll hear the original version of Viva Las Vegas plus the concert versions of See See Rider, The Wonder Of You, Polk Salad Annie, Release Me, Let It Be Me, I Just Can’t Help Believing, Walk A Mile In My Shoes, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Patch It Up, You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me, You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling, An American Trilogy, Never Been To Spain, You Gave Me A Mountain,, The Impossible Dream (The Quest). The sonic quality is without a doubt, exceptional, even transcendent, at least that’s the way I heard it only a few moments ago. There never was any other singer besides Elvis who thoroughly enchanted me, he brought so much joy into my heart, as well as in the heart of so many people. What came first? My love for music or my love for Elvis? I just can’t remember anymore but somehow the marriage has endured since the beginning.
